CNC Mills
Buyer guides, VMC comparisons, and machining tutorials for vertical machining centres, benchtop CNC mills, and multi-axis setups. From hobbyist tormach to full-size Haas VF-series.
What Is a CNC Milling Machine?
A CNC milling machine moves a rotating cutting tool along computer-controlled X, Y, and Z axes to remove material from a workpiece. Unlike manual mills, the tool path is defined by G-code — generated from CAD/CAM software — so complex contours, pockets, and surfaces can be reproduced to within ±0.005 mm cycle after cycle.
Modern machining centres add automatic tool changers (ATC), coolant through the spindle, 4th and 5th rotary axes, and probing systems that allow near-lights-out operation. The spindle taper (CAT 40, BT 40, HSK-A63) determines which toolholders and pull studs your machine accepts.
Whether you're choosing your first benchtop CNC for prototyping, evaluating used VMCs for a production cell, or comparing 5-axis strategies for aerospace work, the guides below give you real numbers from real machines.
