The Three Levers of Cutting Performance
Chip load (fz) — the thickness of material each tooth removes per revolution — is the primary lever. Too low and you're rubbing, which work-hardens the surface and kills tool life. Too high and you exceed the tool's rated strength.
Cutting speed (Vc) — surface speed at the tool tip — primarily determines temperature and thus wear rate. The optimum is material and grade dependent: ISO P (steels) 80–300 m/min carbide; ISO S (titanium) 30–70 m/min; ISO N (aluminium) 500–2,000 m/min.
Radial depth of cut (ae) changes the arc of engagement and thus chip thinning. When ae < D/2, the effective chip thickness is thinner than the programmed fz — requiring the RCTF correction to maintain proper chip load without burning the tool.
